9-a-side Football Formations
9-a-side football uses one goalkeeper and eight outfield players. The formation numbers describe only the outfield players, from defence to attack. These four shapes offer different ways to balance width, midfield support, and forward partnerships.
3-3-2
Three defenders, three midfielders, and two forwards create clear lines and a strike partnership. The wide midfielders provide width and must help the central midfielder when defending. PickLineup uses this as its starting 9-a-side formation.
3-2-3
Three defenders support two central midfielders and a front three of two wingers and a striker. It gives width high up the pitch, but the wingers must recover to help midfield when possession is lost.
3-4-1
A back three sits behind two central and two wide midfielders, with one striker ahead. This gives more support across midfield. The wide players can advance to turn it into a 3-2-3 in attack, while midfield runners help prevent the striker becoming isolated.
2-4-2
Two defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards combine midfield width with a strike pair. The wide midfielders need to recover quickly, and the central pair must provide cover so the two defenders are not left exposed after a turnover.
