5-a-side

5-a-side Football Formations

5-a-side is fast, narrow, and full of transitions. A good lineup keeps one player ready to protect the goal, gives the ball carrier a short pass, and avoids leaving the last defender isolated.

1-2-1 Diamond

The diamond is a strong starting point. One defender screens counter-attacks, two wide players support both directions, and one forward gives the team a target. It is balanced and easy to explain.

2-1-1

The 2-1-1 is safer when a team needs defensive cover. It keeps two players behind the ball more often, but the central player must connect defence to attack quickly.

1-1-2

The 1-1-2 is aggressive and can work when chasing a game. It puts pressure on the opposition, but it leaves space behind the attackers if possession is lost cheaply.

Rotation Matters

In small-sided football, positions are starting references rather than fixed zones. Players should rotate, but someone must always take responsibility for the deepest defensive role.
